HDPE Geomembrane Application in the AI Taweelah Alumina Refinery, Abu Dhabi, UAE

The UAE presents several challenges for geosynthetic liner systems. Many condition can place additional demands on exposed construction materials, such as high temperatures, intense solar radiation, and dry conditions.

Chemical conditions are another important consideration for the Al Taweelah project. Publicly available project information reports a bauxite residue environment with a pH of approximately 12.5, indicating a highly alkaline condition.

HDPE geomembrane is widely used for demanding containment applications because it combines low permeability with good mechanical properties and chemical resistance.

However, selecting the right geomembrane requires more than choosing a standard thickness in the Middle East projects. Many factors should all be considered, such as the material formulation, carbon black content, antioxidant package, thickness, surface structure, welding performance, and expected service conditions.

The Al Taweelah project shows why these factors are particularly important when designing containment systems for hot and chemically challenging environments.

Even a high-quality HDPE geomembrane requires proper installation to achieve its expected performance.

The installation process generally begins with subgrade preparation. The foundation should be properly compacted, graded, and cleared of sharp objects that could damage the liner. Then, geomembrane panels are positioned according to the approved layout. Adequate overlap should be maintained before thermal welding.

For field seams, welding parameters should be adjusted according to the material specification and site temperature. Trial welds are recommended before production welding to confirm suitable temperature, speed, and pressure settings. After welding, seams should be inspected and tested to meet project’s quality-control requirements. Visual inspection, non-destructive testing, and destructive seam testing can be used as required.

For a large containment facility, installation quality is just as important as the geomembrane itself. A well-designed liner system needs both suitable materials and controlled construction procedures.

The Al Taweelah project provides useful experience for other mining and industrial containment projects in the Middle East.

The first lesson is that site conditions should determine material selection. High temperature and strong UV exposure require appropriate material formulation and specifications, while alkaline or chemically aggressive materials require suitable chemical resistance.

The second lesson is that surface structure matters. Smooth and textured geomembranes can be selected to meet different site conditions, particularly where slopes and interface friction are important.

The third lesson is that system design is more important than a single product. Depending on project requirements, HDPE geomembrane may work together with geotextile protection layers, GCL, drainage geocomposites, and drainage pipes.
